This guide shows you how to set up and isolate a clip’s audio before placing it into your timeline, so you’re only working with the channels you actually need—ideal for interviews, nat sound, or field-recorded footage.

🔧 Why Multi-Channel Setup Matters

When importing audio from field recorders, cameras, or wireless mics, a single clip might contain multiple audio sources (e.g., boom mic on Channel 1, lav on Channel 2, camera mic on Channel 3, etc.).
If you don’t prep this correctly, your sequence can become cluttered—or worse, contain unintended tracks.

📂 Step-by-Step: Modify Audio Channels Before Editing

  1. Right-click your clip in the Project panel
    ➜ Choose Modify > Audio Channels…
  2. In the Audio Channels Preset window:
    • Format: Set to Mono (so each channel is independent).
    • Number of Audio Clips: Matches the number of channels you want to extract (e.g., 2 for a stereo field recorder).
    • Use the Assignment grid to map each source channel to its own audio clip.
  3. Click OK.

Now, when you drag the clip into your timeline, each audio source appears on its own track—ready for selective editing, muting, or enhancement.

✅ Benefits

  • Cleaner sequences
  • Easier mixing
  • Clearer dialogue or environment separation
